Red Dot Award Winner: CHERY Q Redefines the Urban Aesthetic Benchmark

CheryQ

A car's design credentials are often decided at first glance. CHERY Q's direction was clear from the start: don't chase fleeting trends. Instead, return to design's most fundamental mission—creating a universal beauty.

This is the foundation laid by China's first double Red Dot award-winning design team. The "Square-Round Harmony" aesthetic gives the car a rare sense of restraint: distinctive yet controlled, refined yet effortless. The Thai market was the first to validate its universal appeal—orders surpassed 1,000 units within ten days of its Bangkok Motor Show launch on March 24, and exceeded 3,000 by June 24. When this same design language faced the world's most rigorous jury, it earned the same recognition.

Red Dot Award: A Chinese Design on the World Stage

The Red Dot jury is composed largely of European design authorities. They hold a set of almost unyielding aesthetic standards for car design. To impress them is never about pandering; it's about engaging in a universal dialogue grounded in fundamental industrial aesthetics.

CHERY Q proved it could hold that conversation. It captured the most coveted prize in the Red Dot system: the Product Design Award. Founded in 1955, Red Dot stands alongside the iF and IDEA awards as one of the design world's three major arbiters. It annually reviews over 20,000 entries from more than 70 countries, with an overall win rate often below 30%. This certification gives CHERY Q's design language immediate, self-explanatory international credibility. And its creator—China's first double Red Dot-winning design team—has its expertise embedded in every line.

Square-Round Harmony: A Universal Expression of Aesthetics

CHERY Q's design core revolves around Square-Round Harmony. It doesn't chase a dramatic view from one angle; it ensures every angle is coherent and pleasing to the eye.

The inspiration draws from the Eastern philosophical pursuit of order and harmony, often expressed as "Heaven is round, Earth is square." CHERY Q reinterprets this concept within a global design context, achieving a universal aesthetic that transcends geography. The Square-Round Harmony language strikes a balance between agility and stability. Super-surfacing replaces traditional sharp creases. Light and shadow glide across the body, revealing different visual moods as the viewing angle shifts, while the overall stance remains restrained and composed.

The front end features a clean, closed-off EV face with the visual anchor on the Q-shaped LED headlights. A square light chamber houses a subtle smiling curve, delivering a soft, approachable expression.

Color is equally critical to the design's integrity. CHERY Q uses a 6-layer 2K high-gloss paint. The goal isn't just a stunning first impression, but enduring performance over time. A 10-year anti-fade quality promise turns the paintwork from mere decoration into a lasting companion. As the design team states: "Beauty is no longer the privilege of the few, but a part of every user's daily life."

This balanced, harmonious aesthetic also determines CHERY Q's ability to cross gender lines. A male driver looks stylish, not flashy. A mother looks polished, not childish. The car doesn't pander to any one group, yet every group feels it fits just right.

Telescopic Volume: Where Golden Proportions Meet Function

If Square-Round Harmony defines CHERY Q's temperament, the Telescopic Volume design grounds that temperament in a solid, functional foundation.

Excellent design starts with proportion. The extreme short-overhang, long-wheelbase layout sculpts CHERY Q's silhouette. The design team defined the stance with three precise parameters: a 3X wheel-axle ratio, a 2.39 wheel-height ratio, and a 0.643 axle-length ratio. These figures target a clear objective: a compact footprint, a spacious cabin, and a planted stance. A body logic derived from the golden ratio delivers a visual coherence and durability that stands up to scrutiny across different cultural aesthetics.

The vehicle uses a four-wheels-at-the-corners layout. It measures 4195mm long, 1811mm wide, and 1570mm high, yet rides on a class-above 2700mm wheelbase. The turning radius is just 5.2 meters, making it almost instinctively nimble on narrow streets. A choice of 16-inch or 17-inch wheels, paired with semi-flush door handles, two-tone side mirrors, and a floating C-pillar, gives the profile a rich sense of depth and a forward-leaning lightness.

Inside the cabin, the design logic remains consistent. A dual-tone T-style layout, contrast-color air vents, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and a column shifter declutter the center console and free up storage space beneath. A 1.22-square-meter windshield combined with a 16.8-degree upper field of vision effectively reduces blind spots. The visual centerpiece is an 8.8-inch instrument panel and a 15.6-inch 2.5K central touchscreen powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, supporting a customizable desktop and quick gesture controls. The interactive experience is calibrated to the same high standard as the design.

From the pedigree of China's first double Red Dot-winning design team, to the official recognition of the Red Dot Product Design Award, to the validation of 3,000 orders from the Thai market, CHERY Q's entire design language points to one conclusion: Good design doesn't need to shout. It's the ability to make everyone feel at ease. Whoever drives it feels it suits them; whoever sits in it enjoys the ride.
